Work: youth unemployment in Italy and Europe – TGCOM

– As the level remains high, as evidenced by Istat – Youth unemployment has fallen from 42 to 40% (to 41.1% in second quarter 2015) – is still a starting point, especially in light of the OECD reproached Italy a few weeks ago, our country has a youth unemployment rate is among the highest in Europe.

Work: youth unemployment in Italy and Europe

In a nutshell, he reminded the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, youth unemployment in Italy in 2014 was increased by 2, 7 points compared to 2013, reaching a total of 42.7%. A threshold that has brought us closer to countries like Greece and Spain, which in recent years have experienced a profound employment crisis.

Today, reading the latest Eurostat figures, the unemployment rate in the age group that includes those under 25 is still particularly high in Greece (51.8% in May 2015), Spain (48.6%) and Croatia (43.1% in the second quarter 2015). Then we come in, with 40.5%.

Unlike the European countries with the lowest rate of young people out of work in July 2015, Germany (7%), Malta (8.7%) and Estonia (9.5% in June 2015). Followed by Austria (10.8%), the Netherlands (11.3%), Denmark (11.7%), Czech Republic (13.4%) and Slovenia (16.7% in June 2015). In general, compared with July 2014, youth unemployment stands at 20.4% in the EU-28 and 21.9% in the Eurozone, 22 and 23.8% recorded last year.

What is important, however, is the effect of the unemployed population. And in the second quarter of the year, returning to report Istat, in the age group between 15 and 24 years, the estimate of the unemployed is 626,000 units (-42 thousand compared to the second quarter 2014). One in ten young people is looking for work: the percentage of unemployed 15- 24enni population in this age group drops to 10.5% from 11.2% a year earlier. In the South the aged 15-24 seeking employment are 325,000 units, 13.8% of its population.

In the age group 18-29 years, the estimate of the unemployed is one million and 121 thousand units (-1.3%, -15 thousand units per year). In this age group, 15% (7 million 487 thousand units) is seeking employment. The unemployment rate of 18-29enni is thus rising to 30.5%, 0.2 points higher than a year ago.

One of the age-old problems of Italy, already pointed out by different bodies , it is the low propensity to invest in human capital. This makes difficult the immediate path and at the same time does not allow to acquire the tools and skills that can be useful throughout working lives.

A fact reflected by the growth of the employed people over 50 (+ 5.8%) due to “miss the outputs from the work generated dall’inasprimento requirements for access to retirement”, while there was a decline in employment aged 15-34 and 35-49enni (respectively -2.2% and -1, 1%).
